household stability

An integrated look at a child’s whole life, and network, is the cornerstone of Ubuntu. Children who do not feel safe and cared-for at home will struggle in school.

Households in the townships of Port Elizabeth take many forms. In some homes, all the responsible adults have died, leaving the children in charge. In some, grandparents are looking after sick children; in some, the reverse is true.

We created Childcare Committees, in which community members reach out within their neighborhoods. Committee members are trained in proper hygiene and care for ill and bedridden individuals. We give these households food packages that will last them throughout the weekend, so that children do not have to take dangerous risks in order to eat.

We offer financial planning lessons during our after-school programs, holiday camps, and home assessments. When families need any assistance with legal support or government grants, we help them navigate the necessary bureaucratic mazes.
