I’m proud Ubuntu is producing responsible citizens

Ongama Mtimka, External Relations Manager posted February 10, 2012

Since joining Ubuntu just a few weeks ago, I have been heartened by the fact that the organisation is inculcating a strong culture of giving back among beneficiaries of its programmes.

LuthandoLuthando Jamda, 23, is on his way to University of Cape Town (UCT) to pursue his bachelor’s degree in Theatre Production. This will be a welcome advancement for an Ubuntu client who has already completed his diploma in theatre.

Even before registering at UCT in January, he was already planning how he would give back to the community after completing his studies, thanks to his passion and Ubuntu’s application criteria for scholarships.

He is committed to empowering young people from his community with acting, directing, and creative writing skills to help them earn a living from their talents. These skills will be handy in the municipality’s plans to create a thriving film and music industry to diversify the automotive-dependent regional economy and create jobs.

A client since Grade 4, Luthando has grown within Ubuntu to make his dreams come true. He started teaching his peers while still in primary school. He has been teaching at Ubuntu’s after-school programme since he completed his diploma a year ago,

This makes me proud to have joined Ubuntu. The beneficiaries’ commitment to their success and that of their fellow residents is guaranteed to increase the reach of the spirit of Ubuntu.
