Who wants to run a marathon?
Five big-hearted men recently flew 3,500 miles and then ran 26.2 for Team Ubuntu.
45,000 incredibly inspiring people of all
nationalities, ages and abilities took to the streets of New York on 6th
November for ING’s NYC Marathon. NYC
buzzed with cheering crowds made of local residents, family members and
tourists and the array of bands that lined the streets in all five boroughs
energized the runners as they went by.
Chris Morley, John Mills, Chip Smith, Mark Stoleson and Brian Kronick were Team Ubuntu. They ran to support our paediatric clinic at the Ubuntu Centre in Zwide Township, South Africa. They ran for the kids who come to Ubuntu for everything from band-aids to HIV drugs. They worked really hard – not just training, but fundraising. And it paid off. They all finished the route, and between them they have raised over $30,000 so far.
Chris Morley said, “After completing the marathon I can truly say it was by far the hardest thing I have ever done! I was doing really well until mile 19... then the hills caught up with me and I did not just hit the wall - it pretty much body-slammed me. I finished in 4hrs 08min and those last 7 miles will stay with me for a long time!! It was a great day though and the atmosphere was awesome - the pain was worth it.”
We salute Team Ubuntu, and thank them on behalf of the children who will benefit from their intrepid efforts.
