Top South African Band Freshlyground visits Ubuntu Centre

Fezeka Mzalazala posted January 4, 2012

Last month we had the pleasure of hosting South Africa’s hottest band– Freshlyground!

The group was in Port Elizabeth as part of their 6-week “Love no Hate 10 Year Anniversary Tour.”

Freshly Ground lead singer Zolani Mahola with Ubuntu clientsThe group, who will be performing at Ubuntu’s 2012 London Gala, arrived saying they had only 30 minutes—and ended up staying for almost 2 hours!

Gcobani, Papy and I showed them around the Ubuntu Centre. We went to the rooftop garden and the pediatric clinic. We spoke with scholarship and after-school students. Students were holding a leadership session in the auditorium, and the band wasted no time before jumping right into the singing and dancing!

Freshly Ground band members join Ubuntu dance gameI had the opportunity to explain the Ubuntu Pathway. Each band member got his or her very own Ubuntu Passport, on which we track all client interactions. I explained how we identify and care for clients from cradle to employment.

The band, made up of lead singer Zolani Mahola (who grew up right here in Port Elizabeth), drummer Peter Cohen, bassist Josh Hawks, guitarist Julio Sigauque, keyboardist Seredeal Scheepers, saxophonist Simon Attwell and violinist Kyla-Rose Smith, was genuinely delightful.

They are very humble people who understand the complexity of life in South Africa and are committed to doing their part to create a better future.  When Zolani spoke to the young leaders, she thanked them for their efforts in furthering themselves. She acknowledged the struggles they have endured but encouraged them to continue with their education, as South Africa needs them for a brighter future.

In the same way South Africa needs the youth of Ubuntu, we also need more leaders like Freshlyground who are committed to doing their part in making a difference.

Thank you sincerely to Freshlyground! This was a happy day for us. We look forward to the next time.
