Battersea Power Station, London: 'Healthy Bodies + Inspired Minds = Bright Futures.' Chair Earl Spencer welcomed celebrities including actress-producer Trudie Styler, Dragon’s Den entrepreneur James Caan, and Space NK founder Nicky Kinnaird. 380 guests enjoyed a South African feast, and performances by Baaba Maal, Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra and the cast of The National Theatre’s FELA! Auction prizes included backstage experiences at Victoria Secret Fashion Show. We raised over £750,000 for Ubuntu’s paediatric HIV clinic.

Battersea Power Station, London: South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela headlined our 2010 UK gala. Two Ubuntu Scholars spoke. South African High Commissioner H. E. Dr. Zola Skweyiya and national football team captain Aaron Mokoena attended. Auction prizes included private lunches with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and James Caan, a boxing lesson with Chris Eubank, and tickets to the FIFA World Cup final. We raised £650,000.

Christ Church Spitalfields, London: Ubuntu marked a decade of working in Port Elizabeth with a majestic set from world-famous Senegalese musician and activist Baaba Maal. 250 guests including Trudie Styler and De Beers Group Executives Jonathan and Jennifer Oppenheimer gathered in the intimate setting of Christ Church Spitalfields, a treasured London landmark. Arnold & Henderson created a nose to tail South African feast.  Inspirational Ubuntu Scholar Lungi Ngceza led the festivities.  We raised over £250,000.

Hempel Hotel, London: Bringing the spirit of the townships to London’s Hempel Hotel, our 2009 imbizo - a gathering – was an intimate cocktail party for our young professional supporters in the city. With canapés and champagne flowing long into the night, we raised over £13,000 and introduced many new friends to our groundbreaking work in South Africa. 

5 Cavendish Square, London: Hosted by Ubuntu’s patron Archbishop Desmond Tutu and attended by Kevin Spacey, this private luncheon launched Ubuntu's UK office. The Archbishop shared his thoughts with an intimate group of London’s philanthropic and business leaders: “Ubuntu Education Fund is reaching the people who count, saying, ‘You are not helpless, you are not ciphers that can be manipulated.  You are people who can prepare your own thoughts.’  And that is important.” 

The Gables, North London: Ubuntu’s inaugural UK gala offered 150 members of London’s South African community an intimate performance by world-renowned jazz legend Hugh Masekela. We raised £350,000. Generously hosted by Sir Sidney and Lady Lipworth, this event was such an overwhelming success that it prompted Masekela to spontaneously auction off his horn from the evening. The event led to Ubuntu opening our London office.
