Canadian Government Supports Ubuntu Health Program
20 May 2006

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) will support Ubuntu Education Fund's treatment access effort through their HIV Rapid Response Division. CIDA, Ubuntu's first bi-lateral funder, provided this CIDA grant after months of proposals, negotiations, and site visits.

Our region of Africa has a 32% HIV rate and at least 30,000 people currently in need of life-saving antiretroviral (ARV) therapy. Ubuntu is strategically positioned to support ARV treatment rollout in the townships of Port Elizabeth through our community-based health services, currently reaching over 40,000 orphaned and vulnerable children. The CIDA grant enables us to make access to antiretroviral (ARV) treatment more efficient and effective.

Today, we have an opportunity to stem the tide of AIDS deaths by helping people access treatment and regain their health. We can now offer parents living with HIV real hope of staying alive to raise their children. The Canadian funding allowsallow us to establish a comprehensive referral network with local clinics to increase enrollment in treatment, bridge the gap between HIV testing and ARV therapy, and follow up with clients enrolled in treatment. These partnerships make the most of community resources and strengthen public health services.
