Running the Distance for AIDS Education
26 March 2005

n 1970 in Cape Town, a small group of runners intended to merely train for marathon competitions. They didn't realize they were setting the path for one of the world's longest and arguably most beautiful races, The Two Oceans Marathon. Today, over 18,000 runners from around the world touch South Africa's Atlantic Ocean and step-by-step compete to be the first on the Republic's Indian Ocean side, 56 kilometers later. On March 26th, 27 MBA students from America and 10 Ubuntu staff ran together in the marathon to benefit our Mpilo-Lwazi Health Initiative.

Business school students from Wharton, Harvard and University of Cape Town operating under the banner Students4Students (S4S) teamed up to raise money and help our communities, showing the world that social change can be created by a small group of determined individuals.

In the days leading up to the race, the S4S group visited Ubuntu in Port Elizabeth to personally meet the young students their aches, pains and efforts are benefiting. This is not a one-way street, as S4S Board member and runner Rush McCloy makes clear, "Having spent time in the townships with the group from Ubuntu, I am more inspired and touched than ever before."

When I first heard that these American students were running the marathon to raise money to help us build more counseling centers so I can counsel more children, I got choked up, I couldn't believe it," said Ubuntu Health Educator Vuyo Tshafa. "These people don't even know me; surely they must have their own problems back in America. I then said that I must start training. We are not runners by training; we are community workers, but we trained everyday, and today 10 of us ran the Two Oceans Marathon with our brothers and sisters from America."
