Community Gardens
Child malnourishment is widespread in the townships of Port Elizabeth. Ubuntu's nutrition component develops community gardens to provide food and income to vulnerable households. During 2006 we doubled the number of students receiving a daily nutritious lunch, reaching 1,700 children. The school gardens are managed by a co-op of previously unemployed parents who are able to take home weekly parcels of vegetables as well as generate an income from sales of surplus produce. In January 2006 we piloted a community garden at KwaZakhele Day Hospital with HIV support group members. The garden now provides a weekly meal for the support group, vegetable parcels to take home, and a source of income to members actively involved in the garden's upkeep.
