Our Programmes Care and Support

"Caring Schools"

While the 21 schools where lifeskills educators are based serve as a critical entry point for OVC, we have deepened our OVC services at five schools. The OVC programme targets high-poverty, high-risk schools and engages them as "Caring Schools."

Working with school governing bodies, administrators, teachers and parents, Ubuntu establishes caring, supportive school environments by placing full-time OVC specialists at "Caring Schools" to identify children for intake into our psychosocial support services. Further, we use a community-based approach to mobilise community members to recognise the needs of OVC. Services are in close alignment with the Department of Social Development's OVC Policy Framework to strengthen family and community-based care for OVC. In conjunction with government agencies, we coordinate income grant and identity document events in local community settings.
