Our Programmes HIV Prevention Outreach

Men as Partners (MAP)
Ubuntu recognises the partnerships between women and men, and the important role that men play in supporting women.

While addressing gender inequalities is a principle that is mainstreamed throughout all of Ubuntu's programming and organisational principles, we specifically use the Men as Partners approach in our HIV prevention activities.

Ubuntu recognises the partnerships between women and men, and the important role that men play in supporting women. Our MAP programme focuses on encouraging men to be part of the equation. Educating men to be responsible for their health and encouraging them to be partners in the fight against HIV/AIDS has been a successful approach. Our community outreach facilitators are working directly with men to help them understand that they can play a critical role in setting a positive example for other men.

Ubuntu outreach facilitators run fun and engaging workshops for men that give concrete examples about how to reduce partner-violence toward women and how to reinforce notions that 'real men' are loving, and care deeply about the women and girls in their lives. The workshops explore reasons why few men test for HIV and discuss benefits of HIV testing. Our staff encourage and work with men to be leaders in their communities around HIV by helping to reduce stigma and support people living with HIV. In addition, women are learning how to engage men to be better partners.
