La'ita Peer Education

The La'ita Peer Education pilot programme launched in March 2007. La'ita translates to "light" in isiXhosa, but also connotes bright, smart or "streetwise" people.

Our La'ita peer educators are a group of 18 young men and women who are completing their final year of matric. They have been trained by Ubuntu staff in HIV prevention and sexual health messaging. They are trained in conducting outreach activities to engage their peers in participatory interventions focused on challenging gender norms, increasing healthy behaviour and establishing relationship norms that promote HIV prevention. They also focus on gender and on living positively with HIV/AIDS.

These peer educators are each tasked with carrying out one-on-one sessions daily in which they have conversations on HIV prevention and sexual health in informal settings. They also conduct workshops twice a week focused on HIV prevention, family planning and teenage pregnancy. They mobilise peers to attend Ubuntu support groups, and assist with support group facilitation.
