Sivulile (Opening Doors) Computer Initiative builds state-of-the-art computer centres in township schools and is making computer literacy a reality for over 13,000 township learners. Enabling township residents to participate in South Africa's increasingly technology-driven economy and higher education systems promises to transform a region haunted by poverty and unemployment and bridge the digital divide.
Sivulile invests in under-resourced schools by developing in-school computer centres to create an ongoing resource for learners, teachers and the greater community to realize technology gains. Working in partnership with The Shuttleworth Foundation and the Eastern Cape Department of Education to create sustainable, accessible technology education centres for our communities, we are empowering township residents with computer skills to enter the world of work and/or higher and further education institutions.
Sivulile Computer Initiative is a school-based technology education program:
- Ubuntu-tuXlabs is an innovative model using an open source platform, community volunteer networks and a rigorous buy-in process to create an inexpensive, easily maintainable technology-education solution.
- Computer center construction has built 13 state-of-the-art computer centers at township schools with 20-25 networked computers, printers and scanners.
- Teacher Training on an ongoing basis for over 400 teachers in basic computer literacy, curriculum integration, facilitation skills, hardware and software maintenance, and center management.
- Extra-curricular Clubs and Camps provide intensive and specialized technology training for 280 at-risk children.

Vincent Mnyameni
Ubuntu Tech. Educator
I went to KwaZakhele High School to give a training
and I met Mr. Ellie the computer coordinator for the
school. My relationship with Mr. Ellie did not only
start there, it goes back to when I was a high school
student and Ellie was my Science teacher in grade
12. Sometimes he would ask to enter marks into the
computer (Excel) during the exams time and l learned
lots of things from him. But now it will be my turn to
show him a thing or two about computers. I never
thought I would be actually training the teacher who
once mentored me about the ways of life.
